Miscellaneous Preferences either apply to more than one area of the application, or just do not merit a category of their own.
Setting Miscellaneous Preferences

Address Lines/Names - controls the labels to display next to freeform address lines. By default, the first address line is called simply, "Address Line 1"; but, if you always plan to use that line for the department number, you could change the name of the field to reflect that and simplify data entry. A fourth address line is also available and can be enabled (and renamed if desired) by selecting the "Display Additional (4th) Address Line" checkbox.
Custom Tools Menu Options - There are three user-definable menu options listed under the Tools menu. This preference enables you to specify the menu text and corresponding program for each option. Three customizable options are available, which can be set up as shortcuts to start any program on your computer, or any other file that your computer recognizes (for example, you could point an option to a document containing your organization's bylaws, and your computer would probably know to open it with your favorite word processor, such as Microsoft Word).
Default Item Date - controls whether the Date field on new membership or group Item entries defaults to the current date. (This is a Miscellaneous preference because it applies to both membership and group records.) Turn this option off to leave the Date field blank.
First Address Name - (standard version only) controls the default name to be used for the first address created on a membership or group record. This defaults to "Main Address." Note: In the Professional version, this preference is replaced by a list of predefined address types, one of which is set as the default.
List Colors - controls the colors used for the display of non-editable lists such as the Membership List, Group List, Dues List, etc. Choose a color for both odd and even numbered rows. This is for appearance only -- there is no program functionality tied to the colors of the lists. Note that when the Color dialog opens, there are five colors predefined in the Custom Colors section. They are from the left: the system "Window Background" color (often white), Light Gray, Light Olive, Sky, and Cream. When selecting a light and dark color, it often looks best to use the darker color for odd numbered rows.
Live Scrolling - controls whether large lists and reports will scroll up and down while you 'drag' scroll bar with the mouse. Turn this off if your computer has limited video capability or if the display becomes erratic when scrolling through large quantities of data (i.e., if you have limited video memory, a large list containing a lot of data may suddenly shift to a boldface-like display, go blank, etc., as Windows runs out of resources). When this option is off the display will not scroll until the mouse button is released.
Prompt on Cancel - controls whether the system will display a "Save Changes?" prompt when you click the Cancel button with unsaved changes. When this option is off, the system assumes when you click Cancel you want to abandon all changes and close the window.
List Refresh Style - controls how much of the Membership, Group, or Activity list is refreshed when a record is opened and edited and you return to the list. The default option of "Targeted" is best in most cases. This means that only the record (row) you were on will be refreshed when you return to the list. When you have a list of 50,000 members, this will be dramatically faster than refreshing the entire list. However, if you have a multi-user system where many people are making changes at once, and you need to see all of their changes as soon as possible, a Complete refresh will ensure that the entire list is refreshed -- picking up any other changes from other users in the process. To perform a complete refresh manually, press F5 or open the Actions menu and choose Refresh Display. Note: Neither option has any effect on the actual saving of data. This only controls the refresh of the display on-screen.
Time Format - controls whether times are displayed in 12 hour format (07:30 pm) or 24 hour format (19:30).
